Below is a glimpse of the PYP program offered by the IB Board. 

Audience – 

The PYP program is for students between 3 to 12 years of age. The curriculum of the PYP program includes

  • Who we are – Inquiry into the nature of self, beliefs, values, personal, physical, mental, social & spiritual health. 
  • Where we are in place & time – Inquiry into orientation in place & time, personal histories, homes and journeys. Additionally, inquiry into the interconnectedness of individuals and civilizations. 
  • How we express ourselves – Inquiry into ways we discover and express ideas, feelings, nature, culture and values. 
  • How does the world work – Inquiry into the natural world and its laws. Additionally, inquiry into interaction between the natural world and human societies. 
  • How do we organize ourselves - Inquiry into the interconnectedness of man-made systems and communities, the structure and function of organizations.
  • Sharing the planet – Inquiry into rights and responsibilities in the struggle to share finite resources with others. 

Key components – 

  • Concepts – Form, Function, Causation, Change, Connection, Perspective, Responsibility, Reflection
  • Skills – Thinking, Social, Communication, Self-management, Research
  • Attitudes – International-mindedness & personal development. This includes respect, tolerance, integrity, independence, empathy and curiosity. 
  • Focus on meaningful action

Grades or Classes – 

  • Early years (3 to 5 years) – Pre-kindergarten (Pre-K), Kindergarten 1 (K1), Kindergarten 2 (K2) – Focus on play-based learning, foundational literacy, numeracy skills, social interactions
  • Primary years (6 to 12 years) – Grades 1 through 6 – Reading, Writing, Mathematics, Science, Social studies, Interdisciplinary themes, Real world applications

Assessments – 

  • Formative – Ongoing assessments that provide feedback to improve and inform teaching & learning
  • Summative – Assessments that evaluate student learning at the end of the instructional period. 
  • Student portfolios – Collection of student work that demonstrates learning progress, skills and achievements over time.
  • Exhibition – A culminating project for students in the final year of PYP.
